2012 News-Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders List in September
As a freshman, Niko joined us with junior high cross country experience.  He showed right away that he has a lot of leg speed and can handle the tougher high school workouts.  He dedicated himself this summer to get in shape and ran an impressive 300 miles.  This is quite a large amount of miles for any high school runner, but especially impressive as he did it his freshman year.  Niko joined our team's 300 mile club.  Niko ran a solid first race and finished with a time of 23:07 at the Charleston Invitational.  Niko made his way onto the News-Gazette prep cross country leaders in September.  Niko ran a great race at the Springfield Invitational.  He ran a lifetime 2 mile best by almost 3 minutes with a time of 14:04.  He helped his freshman team win the freshman team championship trophy.  Niko had our team's biggest improvement at the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational.  Niko cut off 1 minutes and 54 seconds from his best to run a new lifetime best of 21:13.  This time was holding his 2 mile best from the week before for an entire 3 mile race.  He earned our team's most improved for the week award.  Niko ran a solid time at the East Peoria Invitational with a time of 21:36.  Niko ran his second fastest time of the year at the Metamora Invitational with a 21:36.  It was great to see him running in the 21's again.  Niko ran a 22:16 at the conference meet where he placed 5th in the open race.
As a sophomore, Niko joins us with another great summer under his belt.  He ran 300 miles in the summer months and joined our team's 300 mile club.  His early season workouts show his increased strength and experience.  Niko ran his season best at the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational with a 22:14.  Niko along with his team placed the highest they ever had at that invitational.  Niko went on to run another season best at the East Peoria Invitational with a 22:13.  He was one of only a few of our runners that ran a season best on the challenging East Peoria course.
