   As a freshman, Mathias joins us with both cross country and track experience at the junior high.  Mathias proved himself to be one of the strongest runners in our junior high history in cross country.  Mathias was a two time State qualifier in cross country in junior high.  He was an All-State runner as an 8th grade runner in cross country where he ran the fastest time ever recorded by a Mahomet-Seymour runner at the State meet.  Mathias ran 400 miles in the summer.  He earned a spot on our 400 mile club.  He earned himself a spot on the News-Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders list in September. Mathias had a great run at the Springfield Invitational.  He helped our team win the Freshman race with the lowest points we have seen scored with a score of 16.  Mathias looked strong and finished with a time of 10:51 on a challenging course.  He was runner-up in the meet.  He earned a medal for placing 2nd.  He earned the 5th fastest spot on our team's fastest times list for freshmen at the Springfield Invitational.  Mathias earned his way onto our sub 30 South Mahomet loop again as a freshman.  Mathias had some great workouts leading into our third race.  He led his fresh/soph team at the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational placing 53rd.  He ran a 16:32 which earned him a spot on our team's 16 minute 3 mile club.  Mathias' time also earned him a spot on the News-Gazette's prep cross country leaders list in September.  Mathias earned the 4th highest spot on our team's fastest top freshman times list for the PND Invite.  He earned enough letter points after his third race to earn his first high school varsity letter.  Mathias Powell ran the 14th fastest freshmen time ever run by a Mahomet runner at any meet in 46 years.  Mathias led his fresh/soph team to win the East Peoria Invitational.  Mathias was the meet champion earning the first place medal.  He won with a time of 16:32.  He ran the 6th fastest freshman time at this invite by a Mahomet runner.  He earned a spot on the News-Gazette's prep cross country leaders list in October.  Mathias joined our Old Dog club by breaking 5 minutes in the mile.  Mathias had an excellent race at the Metamora Invitational placing 39th against some top ranked teams in the State.  His place earned him a medal.  He ran the 3rd fastest time of any freshmen in the invitational.  He earned the 6th fastest freshman time for a Mahomet runner at this invite. His time was a season best by 23 seconds with a 16:09.  His time ranks him 9th of all time for a Mahomet freshman run in any race in any meet in 46 years.  Mathias ran his fastest race of the season at the Conference meet.  He ran a 16:00 to finish runner up in the open race.  He helped his team win the open race with a low team score of 17 points.  Mathias ran a lifetime best time with a 9 second improvement.  He earned the 3rd spot on our team's fastest freshman top times list for the Conference meet.  Mathias earned a spot on our team's State meet roster.  Mathias raced well at the Regional meet where he placed 5th for the team helping them win the Regional meet.  He helped them run the fastest top 7 runner average in the 46 year history of our team racing in the Regional meet.  He ran a 16:13 which earned him the 3rd spot on our team's fastest freshman times list at the Regional meet.  Mathias ran a great race at the Sectional meet despite the horrible weather conditions.  He ran a 16:41 to place 45th in the high powered meet.  He ran the 8th fastest freshman time Mahomet has ever had at the Sectional meet.  He helped his team win the Sectional and qualify for State.  Mathias also earned a spot on the News-Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders List in November.  Mathias and his teammates earned at medal at the State meet for placing 2nd.

    As a sophomore, Mathias came out stronger than ever after a great summer of training.  He quickly stepped into the top 7 of our early workouts.  He broke our sophomore record for the 3 mile time trial and the 1200s workout.  Mathias had an excellent start to the season.  He broke into the 15's with a 15:52.  He earned a spot on our team's 15 minute 3 mile club.  He earned a medal by placing 6th.  He showed great discipline by running with his teammates in a pack the entire race where they finished 1st-8th in the 13 team invitational.  He earned the 3rd fastest sophomore time ever at this invitational by a Mahomet runner.  Mathias
earned a spot on the News-Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders list in September. Mathias ran with his teammates in a tight pack to win the Springfield Invitational.  They finished 6 runners in 1 second spread.  Mathias earned a medal for his high place.  He earned his second varsity XC letter after this meet.  He earned a top spot on our team's fastest sophomore top times list at the Springfield Invitational.  Mathias had a very strong race on a wet course at the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational.  We have only had 10 runners in 17 years ever place in the top 31 in this meet.  Mathias placed 31st to earn a medal.  He helped his team place 2nd in the the 70 team invitational.  They beat 23 State ranked teams and 2 nationally ranked teams.  Mathias earned the 2nd spot on our team's fastest sophomore times list at the PND Invitational.  Mathias ran a season and lifetime personal best with an improvement of 27 seconds.  Mathias held the number one sophomore time in the State for a AA runner after this meet.  Mathias defended his title at the East Peoria Invitational.  He comfortably ran a 16:45 to win the 21 team invitational.  Mathias earned a spot on our team's fastest sophomore times list at the East Peoria Invite.  He earned a medal for his first place finish and led his team to win the invitational.  Mathias joined our team's old dog sub 5 minute mile club by breaking 5 minutes in the mile. He joined our sub 5 for 5 club.  Mathias ran a lifetime best of 15:13 at the Metamora Invitational.  Mathias won a medal by placing 10th.  He helped his team win the 26 team invitational with 20 points.  Mathias earned the 2nd spot on our fastest sophomore times list at the Metamora Invitational.  He earned a spot on the News-Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders list in October.  Mathias broke into the 14s for the first time at the conference meet.  He ran the fastest sophomore time ever by any runner from any school at the Cornbelt conference meet since the 1970s.  He placed 7th which helped his team win the Conference meet with the lowest top 7 runner average at this meet ever.  Mathias ran the fastest sophomore Mahomet time ever at the Conference meet.  He earned Elite status for his effort at the conference meet by milesplit.com.  Mathias ran a solid race at the Sectional meet.  He ran a 15:17 to place 6th.  His high place earned him All-Sectional honors and a medal.  He helped his team win the Sectional, earn the fastest top 5 runner average and top 7 runner average we have ever had at the Sectional meet in 47 years.  He earned the fastest sophomore time of any Mahomet runner in the Sectional meet in those 47 years.  He qualified for State for the 2nd time.  He ran a great race at State.  He ran a 14:59 to be the fastest sophomore runner from any school at State.  He also ran the fastest sophomore time for any Mahomet ever at State.  He placed 18th earning a medal and All-State status.  He helped his team win State as a team so he earned a second medal for that.  He helped our team tie 2 State records.  They set the most amount of All-State runners with 6.  Only 2 other teams in 71 years have accomplished this.  They also ran the fastest top 5 team average of any non AAA team in 71 years.  Mathias earned Elite Status from his performance at State.  Mathias earned our team's most valuable award and Bulldog award along with his State team.  He earned our team's scholar/athlete award for his high grades.  Mathias earned the Brent Johnson True Grit award for his toughness.  He earned a spot on the News-Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders list in November.  He went on to earn a spot on the News Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders List in December.  He earned First Team All Area Honors.  He earned Elite status by milesplit for his time at the Nike Cross Nationals Midwest Regional race where he ran a 15:39 to place 35th.  He helped his team place 3rd.  Mathias' team won an at-large bid to qualify for the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland.  Mathias placed 137th at the Nike Cross Nationals with a 17:16 on a very muddy course.  He helped his team place 17th at Nationals.  Mathias helped his team earn a national ranking as high as 13th throughout the season.  In the final rankings his team earned a 17th in the nation spot.

   As a junior, Mathias came in ranked in the top 10 returnees in the State for AA.  He ran a smooth race at the Charleston Invitational with a time of 16:01.  He earned a medal by placing 8th.  He earned the 11th fastest junior time we have had at that invite.  He helped his team win the 13 team invitational.  Mathias ran another smooth race at the Springfield Invitational with a time of 15:42.  His time earned him the 5th fastest junior time we have had at this invite in 14 years.  He placed 3rd and helped lead his team to placing 2nd in this 19 team invitational.  He earned his third varsity XC letter after this meet.  Mathias earned a spot on the News-Gazette prep cross country leaders list in September.  He ran his lifetime best at the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational with a time of 14:51.  He earned the 2nd spot on our team's fastest junior times list at the PND Invite.  He placed 6th overall to earn a medal.  He helped his team place 9th in the invitational.  Mathias earned our team's scholar/athlete award by earning an academic letter for the second time.  Mathias ran a solid race at the East Peoria Invitational where he was runner up.  He ran a 15:35 to earn the 7th spot on our team's fastest junior times list at the East Peoria Invitational.  He earned a medal for his 2nd place finish.  Mathias ran runner up at the Metamora Invitational.  He tied his season best with a 14:51.  He improved 22 seconds from his time last year at this invite.  He ran the 2nd fastest time we have had a Mahomet junior run at this invite.  He helped his team win the 29 team invitational.  Mathias helped our team win the Conference meet with his runner up finish.  He ran a 15:30 to earn the 9th spot on our team's fastest junior times list at the conference meet.  He earned a medal and all-conference honors by placing 2nd.  He earned a spot on our team's State series roster for the third year. 
He earned a spot on the News Gazette Area Cross Country Leaders List in October.  Mathias won the regional meet with the fastest time we have had a Mahomet runner run at this meet.  He ran a 14:33.8 which was the 6th fastest time ever run by any runner from any school in any meet on the Metamora course.  He helped his team run the fastest top 5 and top 7 runner average at the Regional meet in 48 years.  Mathias won the Sectional meet with a 15:05.  This earned him All-Sectional status and a medal.  He earned the 2nd fastest spot on our team's fastest junior times list at the Sectional meet.  He helped his team win the Sectional meet and became a three time State qualifier in the process.  He helped his team run the 2nd fastest top 5 and 2nd fastest top 7 runner average in our 48 year history at the Sectional meet.  He earned a spot on the News Gazette Area Cross Country Leaders List in November.  Mathias had his season best 3 mile time at State.  He ran a 14:45 to place 4th overall.  He earned All-State status for his top 25 finish.  He helped his team win the State Championship for the second year in a row.  He earned a medal for being part of our State championship team and for being an All-State runner.  He helped his team run the 2nd fastest top 5 runner average we have run.  He ran the fastest junior time we have had at State.  Mathias won our fastest junior award.  He also won the flying Dutchman award for placing in conference, Regional, Sectional, and State.  Mathias earned first team All-Area honors from the News-Gazette.

   As a senior, Mathias entered the season as the fastest returning AA runner in the State.  He was given the AA #1 preseason predicted favorite to win State by both ILXCTF.com and IL.MileSplit.com.  He was ranked 67th in the nation by Milesplit.com in the preseason prediction.  He ran over 400 miles in the summer to earn our team's 400 mile club award.  He opened up his senior season by winning the Charleston Invitational.  He ran a 15:30 which earned him the 2nd spot on our team's fastest senior times list.  He earned a medal for his 1st place finish and helped his team win the meet.  Mathias earned a spot on the News Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders List in September.  Mathias helped pull his teammates in our Monticello triangular meet.  Mathias was the individual meet champion and helped our team win the meet.  He ran a 17:35 at the Monticello triangular for a smooth race.  Mathias had a 46 second improvement at the Peoria Notre Dame Invitational race.  He broke his lifetime best to run a 14:44.1 on a true 3 mile course.  He placed 3rd in the meet which tied for the highest finish we have had in the 19 years running in the meet.  Mathias had the 2nd fastest Mahomet time ever at this meet.  He helped his team place 35th in the meet.  He earned his 4th varsity letter at this meet.  He earned a spot on our 14 minute 3 mile club for the 3rd year in a row.  He had shown himself to be one of the best runners in the State again this season.  Mathias led his team to a 3rd place finish at the East Peoria Invitational.  He won the invitational running a comfortable 15:05.  He earned a medal for winning the meet.  He earned the 3rd spot on our team's fastest senior times list at the East Peoria Invitational. Mathias earned a spot on the News-Gazette Prep Cross Country Leaders List in October. Mathias ran a great physical and mental race at Metamora where he won the Invitational with a time of 14:56.  He won by a 31 second margin over the 2nd fastest AA runner in the State.  He earned a medal and helped his team win a 4th place trophy in the 28 team invite.  Mathias ran away with the Conference meet taking away the title.  He became a 3 time All-Conference runner.  He earned a spot on our team's State meet roster for his 4th season. He was awarded athlete of the week by Mahomet Citizen in October. Mathias earned our team's scholar/athlete award due to his high grades. Mathias won the Regional meet for the 2nd year.  He won it by 30 seconds over the runner ranked 2nd in State.  He earned the 9th spot on our team's fastest senior times list.  He won a medal and All-Regional honors by placing 1st.  He helped his team advance to the Sectional meet.  Mathias won the Sectional meet for the second year in a row.  He won a medal and All-Sectional honors for his high finish.  He became a four time State qualifier.  He entered the State series with the fastest AA state's fastest time of the season.  He won our team's most valuable runner award.  He won our team's Bulldog award his senior year.  Mathias ended his high school career by winning the State meet.  He became our school's first three time All-State XC runner.  He won by 17 seconds.  He ran our school record with a time of 14:31.77.  He won a medal for his All-State race.  He won 8 of his 9 senior races.  He was undefeated in AA.  Mathias capped off his senior year by earning the News-Gazette All-Area Athlete of the Year.
