Normal U-High Invitational:

Mahomet -Seymour placed 2nd in the 14 team invitational. (12 full teams and 2 partial teams).
They fell just 2 points shy of Normal U-High.

Kyle Nofziger and Joseph Scheele ran stride for stride with the current News-Gazette's top area runner.   They came in 2nd and 3rd in the meet.  Kyle and Joseph ran the fastest and 3rd fastest sophomore time we have had at this invitational.
Joseph broke into the 15's for the first time with a 15:56.  Kyle and Joseph are 2 of only 17 sophomore runners our program has ever had in 50 years that have run faster than 16 minutes.
Jonah Singer made the largest improvement of the day.  He improved 1 minute and 19 seconds from his season best.  He ran 3rd for our team and broke into the 16s for the first time this year.
Nick Mies tied his best time to come in 4th for our team.

Our team had 4 runners pushing each other for our number 5 spot.  This was a great team effort since our team score is determined by the top 5 finishers from our team.  Some coaches say that the most important runner on the team is the 5th runner.  Josh Wilcoski, Hayden Grotelueschen, Joe Taylor, and Gage Williams all finished within 20 seconds of each other for 5th-8th on our team.  This was very important to the team score.

Gage Williams earned a medal for being the 2nd fastest runner from any team wasn't in the top 7 of a team.

Taylor Fan and Ben Wallace really helped each other in the race.  Both had a lifetime best as a result with a 18:00 and 18:07.

Peter Slezak had one of the best improvements on the team.  It is rare to have someone improve this much at this point in the season.  He improved 60 seconds.  Finishing just in front of Peter was Karsten Waisath who ran right at this lifetime best with a 18:47.

Chase Misenheimer and Avery Seaman worked well together in the race to help Avery run a season best time.  Alex Carpenter ran close to his lifetime best by running in the 24s at this meet.

This moved our team record to 36 - 7 for the season.

Metamora Invitational:

Mahomet-Seymour placed 3rd in the varsity race.  29 teams were represented (25 full teams and 4 partial teams).

Our current record is 61 wins and 9 losses for the season.

Kyle Nofziger and Joseph Scheele led the team as they ran in the 15s again with a 15:16 and 15:35.  Close behind Jonah Singer and Nick Mies ran together for a 16:03 each.  This was the first time Nick ran in the 16s and he almost made it into the 15s.
Joe Taylor and Hayden Grotelueschen broke into the 16s for the first time with a 16:41 and 16:46.  Gage Williams rounded out our top 7 with a lifetime best of 17:22.  Josh Wilcoski came in right behind Gage with a 17:28 showing the depth of the team.

Taylor Fan and Karsten Waisath worked together to break into the 17s for the first time with a 17:49 each.  Ben Wallace ran a lifetime best of 18:02.  Peter Slezak also ran a 18:02 which was a 48 second improvement on the season.

John Tender and Chase Misenheimer both broke into the 19s for the first time with a 19:28 and 19:52.  Avery Seaman broke into the 20s for the first time in the season with a 20:31.

Alex Carpenter had the largest improvement of the day.  He went from running int the 24s to a 21:12.  He has shown such tremendous growth and determination this season.

It is worthy to note that 3 of our sophomores ran in the 10 fastest sophomore times our team has ever had.  This shows their strong potential for the future as well as the here and now.

A handful of our runners showed that they are some of the strongest runners our program has had in the fifty year history of our XC program.
Hayden Grotelueschen ran the 24th fastest freshman  time of any Mahomet runner on any course in the last fifty years.
Kyle Nofziger ran the 3rd fastest sophomore time of any Mahomet runner on any course in the last fifty years.
Joseph Scheele ran the 10th fastest sophomore time of any Mahomet runner on any course in the last fifty years.

Conference:

Our boys won the conference meet.  This was our last race for the majority of the team as we can only enter 7 runners in the State series.  It was a nice note to end the regular season on.  All the runners really gave an incredible effort at this meet and I was super proud of them.

We were thankful that we had so much support for this home meet.  Parents, teachers and community members came out to cheer.  Our girls team did an amazing job getting to places that had no other fans to support our boys.

Kyle Nofziger (sophomore), Joseph Scheele (sophomore), Nick Mies (junior), Joe Taylor (junior), Gage Williams (freshman), Hayden Grotelueschen (freshman), and Jonah Singer (sophomore) were our top seven runners in the conference meet.

Kyle Nofziger (2nd) , Joseph Scheele (3rd) , Nick Mies (7th) , and Joe Taylor (9th) all earned all-conference honors by placing in the top ten runners of the meet.
They all earned a medal for finishing in the top  10.

Freshmen, Gage Williams (12th) and Hayden Grotelueschen (13th) ran very well both placing in the top 13 with solid times on our challenging course.

It was our senior meet.  Our two seniors, David Wilcoski and Peter Slezak ran very strong races to finish their high school cross country career.  David ran right at his season best despite it being a slower course.  Both David and Peter ran better times than at last year's conference meet.

Nick Mies (16:45), Joe Taylor (17:12), Taylor Fan (17:50), John Tender (19:35), Alex Carpenter (23:46), and Gage Williams (17:28) all ran their season best true 3 mile times.  This showed how determined they were to run this on our course.  Our course is often up to a minute slower for most runners.

Chase Misenheimer and John Tender earned enough letter points after this meet to earn their varsity letter.

Our runners showed big improvements from conference just one year ago.
David Wilcoski improved 6 seconds from last year's conference meet.
Peter Slezak improved 19 seconds from last year's conference meet.
Kyle Nofziger improved 33 seconds from last year's conference meet.
Chase Misenheimer improved 54 seconds from last year's conference meet.
Jonah Singer improved 1 minute and 44 seconds from last year's conference meet.
Joe Taylor improved 1 minute and 46 seconds from last year's conference meet.
Josh Wilcoski improved 2 minutes and 19 seconds from last year's conference meet.
Joseph Scheele improved 2 minutes and 24 seconds from last year's conference meet.
Karsten Waisath had the most improvement with 2 minutes and 35 seconds from last year's conference meet.

Regional:

Our boys placed 3rd in the Regional meet.
They finished behind #5 State ranked Metamora and #7 State ranked Bloomington.
They were able to beat #10 State ranked Normal U-High and #19 State ranked Champaign Centennial.
They qualified for the Sectional meet for the 17th year in a row.  The boys represented our team and alumni well.  I was super proud of them.

We could only race 7 runners in the Regional meet.
Kyle Nofziger (sophomore), Nick Mies (junior), Joseph Scheele (sophomore), Jonah Singer (sophomore), Josh Wilcoski (sophomore), Caleb Dowers (junior), and David Wilcoski (senior) ran in our top seven for the day.

Our team knew they had to race right at their best to have a chance to qualify for the Sectional meet.  Our Regional had the most amount of State ranked teams in it.  Many of the teams were very comparable to our team which made it a real possibility that we might not qualify for the Sectional meet despite having a solid team.  This put a lot of emotional pressure on the runners.  They handled the pressure very well and were able to place higher than each individual was predicted to.  We knew it was especially important for our 5th, 6th, and 7th runners to run lifetime bests.  All three of them (Josh Wilcoski, Caleb Dowers, and David Wilcoski) ran their best times.  I was super pleased with their performances.  They gave everything they had to their teammates.  Caleb had a big break through at the right time.  Caleb improved 27 seconds from his best time.  He helped pull his teammates to the places we needed at the right times in the race.  He showed a lot of team spirit by running with such intensity under such high pressure.

Up front, Kyle Nofziger, Nick Mies, and Joseph Scheele all placed in the top 11 in the 11 team meet.

Kyle ran right at his lifetime best to place 4th in the race.  This earned him All-Regional honors.  His time was the fastest time any Mahomet sophomore has run in the Regional meet in 50 years.

Nick Mies had an amazing race.  He felt great and was able to run in the 15s for the first time.  His time of 15:45 is one of the strongest times we have had at the Regional meet in almost 50 years.  He improved 18 seconds from his previous lifetime best.  His time was the 10th fastest time any Mahomet junior has run at the Regional meet.  We have had some tremendous juniors over the years so this was quite an accomplishment.

Joseph Scheele broke into the 15s again with a 15:53.  His time was the 4th fastest time that any Mahomet sophomore has run in 50 years at the Regional meet.

Jonah Singer finished 4th  for our team and showed just how strong the sophomore class is.  He ran a 16:26 which was the 16th fastest time any Mahomet sophomore has run in our 50 year history at the Regional meet.

I was also very appreciative and proud of our runners that weren't running that made  sure they were super supportive to their teammates during the race.  They ran all over the course to make sure to cheer on and encourage their teammates in the high stakes race.  It made a big difference as four of our runners ran lifetime bests and the other three were close to their bests.  They care deeply about their teammates and it showed at the Regional meet.

The following runners showed great  improvement from last year's meet to this year's meet.
David Wilcoski improved 49 seconds from his 2018 to 2019 Regional time.
Kyle Nofziger improved 57 seconds from his 2018 to 2019 Regional time.
Josh Wilcoski improved 1 minute and 34 seconds from his 2018 to 2019 Regional time.
The other four ran in the Regional meet for the first time.

The following runners earned a spot on our team's fastest times list for the Regional meet.

Sectional

Our team placed 3rd in the 18 team Sectional meet.

Going into the Sectional meet we were ranked anywhere from 4th to 7th in the meet so our runners knew they had to run especially well in order to be in the top five teams so they could qualify for the State meet.

There were 8 State ranked teams racing in the Sectional meet (9 if you combine both State rankings).  Our runners really handled the high pressure beyond where most teams would.  The course was incredibly wet so the times from all teams were slow.  Yet four of our runners ran their best 3 mile time when the team needed them to.

Our runners beat every team from our Regional meet just one week ago where they placed 3rd.  They came together mentally and physically when their team needed them to.  They beat the State ranked teams of Metamora, Bloomington, Normal U-High, Geneseo, Limestone, and Washington.

I think what isn't seen in the team score is how much support our runners got from their teammates, their families, our alumni, and our alumni parents that showed up to encourage them during the race.  Their teammates were running all over the course to support their teammates at key places where our runners would need  it.  I do not think without this help that our top 7 runners would have been able to dig down so much.  It showed how much our runners that were racing and those who weren't really care about each other.  The success of our team and program is not based off talent as much as it is based off how much our runners have cared about each other and how much support they have gotten from their families.  I am so grateful for this as a coach both this year and in past years.

Kyle Nofziger led the team by finishing 10th in 16:03.  This earned him All-Sectional honors.  He ran 18 seconds faster than he did last Sectional meet.  He ran the 11th fastest time of any Mahomet sophomore at the Sectional meet in the past 50 years.

Nick Mies finished a stride behind to finish 11th in 16:04.  Nick had the largest improvement of the day.  He cut off 41 seconds from his lifetime 3 mile best.  He ran the 19th fastest time of any Mahomet junior at the Sectional meet in the past 50 years.

Jonah Singer finished third for the team with a 16:36.  Jonah cut off 13 seconds from his 3 mile season best time.  He really had a major impact on the success of our team for the day.  He was able to pass a large pack of runners in the final half mile that helped us pass up a couple teams in the team score.  If he had settled in the race I do not think we would have qualified as a team for State.  Jonah ran the 17th fastest time of any Mahomet sophomore at the Sectional meet  in the past 50 years.

Joseph Scheele finished forth for the team with a 16:45.  He improved 36 seconds from his last year's sectional time.  He ran the 21st fastest time of any Mahomet sophomore at the Sectional meet in the past 50 years.

Joe Taylor finished 5th for the team with a time of 16:55.  He cut off 17 seconds from his lifetime 3 mile best.  He broke into the 16s for the first time on a true 3 mile course. Joe's race was incredibly important.  He knew he had to beat many of the other State ranked #5 runners in order for our team to make it to State.  Joe had to improve about 15-30 seconds faster than his tough competitors did.  This would have mentally  crushed most high school runners, but Joe ran with such determination that he did exactly what his teammates needed out of him.  He improved 23 seconds from his last year's sectional meet.  He ran the 35th fastest time of any Mahomet junior at the Sectional meet in the past 50 years.

Hayden Grotelueschen ran 6th for the team.  He also ran a lifetime 3 mile best with a time of 17:07.  It is rare that a freshman races in the boys Sectional meet.  It is even more rare that a freshman will run their lifetime best in this stressful meet.  Hayden is an amazing runner and ran well beyond his years.  He dug down and helped our team by beating many #4 and #5 runners from the other top teams.  This helped push back their score.  He showed he is a champion runner.  He ran the 12th fastest time of any Mahomet freshmen at the Sectional meet in the past 50 years.  He will be one of only 10 Mahomet freshman runners ever to race at the State meet in 50 years.

Josh Wilcoski ran 7th for our team with a 17:41.  He improved 60 seconds from his Sectional  time last year.  Josh also helped our team by raising other team's scores by getting in front of their top 5 runners.  Josh ran the 30th fastest time of any Mahomet sophomore at the Sectional meet in the past 50 years.

The following showed great improvement from last year's Sectional meet to this year's Sectional meet
Kyle Nofziger improved 18 seconds from last year's Sectional meet.
Joe Taylor improved 23 seconds from last year's Sectional meet.
Joseph Scheele improved 36 seconds from last year's Sectional meet.
Josh Wilcoski improved 60 seconds from last year's Sectional meet.

State

Our team finished 11th out of 26 teams.

It was a great finish to the season.  They started off unranked in the State rankings in the preseason rankings.  They remained unranked until late in the season.  They finished higher in almost every meet than they were ranked throughout the season to conclude the season by proving they were one of the strongest teams in the State.

The thing I most enjoyed about the team was how much they invested into each other.  Our program has had some teams with tight bonds and that has led to these teams' success.  This 2019 group ranks among the top of our program's teams with the tightest team bond.  They had runners that stepped up throughout the year when we needed them including during the State series as alternates.  The runners not running gave so much so to their teammates in the State series both as training partners, alternates, and as their most active supporters during the races.  It was so great to watch how much they cared about each other.

The alumni runners really reached out to send words of encouragement.  Our current and alumni parents also went to great lengths throughout the season to help our program.  I am so appreciative of their support.
