2013 Meet Summaries

Charleston Invitational:
Mahomet-Seymour won the 13 team Charleston Invitational.  They scored 33 points which is the lowest team score our team has had since joining this invitational in 2005.  Our team also had the lowest top 7 team time average that any of our Mahomet team's has had since joining the meet with an average time of 16:27.  Sophomore Alex Keeble, Junior Jackson Powell, Junior William Wolf, Senior Ethan Russell, Senior James Williams, Freshman Gabe Pommier, and Freshman Andrew Walmer were our top 7 finishers.  James Williams was our team's fastest number five runner ever at this invitational.  This is extremely important as your team score isn't stopped until the #5 runner from your team finishes.  James also was the lowest place ever for a #5 runner at this invitational.  James placed 11th.

Our runners did an excellent job adjusting to a last minute change to the meet.  The host of the meet switched from having a varsity race at 9:00 am and an open race at 10:45 am to a combined boys race at 9:00 am.  This didn't give the majority of our team time to mentally adjust to running earlier.  The runners did amazingly well warming up quickly and racing well.  Had they run the open our runners would have won the open race as they have in years past.  They were planning to give 25 medals in the varsity race and 15 medals in the open race until the last minute change.  I figured out the top open results since I know many of our runners would have been curious as to how they would have placed.  The top 16 open race places would have been 1st - Andrew Walmer, 2nd - Kyle Appelquist, 3rd - Brian Butcher, 4th - Jake Keller, 5th - Mason McAnally, 6th - Daniel Middendorf, 7th - Curt Kupferschmid, 8th - a runner from Central, 9th - Ben Craw, 10th - a second Central runner, 11th - a Shelbyville runner, 12th - a Mattoon runner, 13th - Joey Magyar, 14th - a second Mattoon runner, 15th - Chris Carlton, 16th - Nathaniel Cebulski.  A perfect score is the top 5 places which our runners would have scored.  This shows the great depth of the middle of our team.  They work hard in practice and it showed in the meet.

In the end, the hosts decided to award 40 medals for the combined race since they didn't run the open.  Our team had 10 medalists.  Alex Keeble 2nd, Jackson Powell 4th, William Wolf 9th, Ethan Russell 10th, James Williams 11th, Gabe Pommier 19th, Andrew Walmer 26th, Kyle Appelquist 27th (Senior), Brian Butcher 32nd (Freshman), and Jake Keller 38th (Sophomore) all earned a medal.

Two runners from our team earned a place on our team's most improved over a career list.  We look at a runner's first high school 3 mile race compared to their best overall 3 mile time in their high school career.  Nathaniel Cebulski ran a lifetime personal best of 19:09 which gave him a 5:50 career improvement for 10th on the list.  Daniel Middendorf also ran a lifetime personal best of 18:33 which gave him a 6:28 career improvement.  This moved him up to 7th on the all-time list.

Alex Keeble ran the fastest sophomore time ever by a Mahomet-Seymour runner at this meet.  Alex also ran the fastest time for any Mahomet runner at this invite (all grades included) with a time of 15:36.

Jackson Powell broke into the 15's for the first time with a 15:55.  This was the 2nd fastest time for a junior from Mahomet at the Charleston Invite.

Alex Keeble and Jackson Powell were given IL elite status by dyestatil.com for their performance at the Charleston Invitational.

We have only had 5 runners ever run in the 15s on this course.  Alex and Jackson are 2 of the runners from the past 9 years that have been able to accomplish this feat.

Springfield Invitational:
Mahomet set a new record for our team.  They won all three races at the 20 plus team Springfield Invitational.  We also had 2 meet champions in these races.  This showed the depth of our team at all age levels and how hard each of our runners work during the season and throughout the year.

Our varsity had the lowest team score we have ever had at 42 points.  They had our first 5 places in the top 10 of the invitational.  They also ran the fastest top 5 runner average that we have ever had at this invitational by over 5 seconds with an average of 15:54.  They also set our team record for the fastest top 7 average at this invite with a 16:12.  We had 6 medalist in the varsity race out of the 25 total medals given away.  Alex Keeble placed 2nd with a season best of 15:33.  Jackson Powell ran in the 15's again with a lifetime best of 15:49 to place 4th.  William Wolf ran a lifetime personal best of 16:00 to place 7th.  Ethan Russell ran a season best of 16:02 to place 8th.  Trevor Hanlon ran a lifetime best of 16:06 to place 10th.  James Williams ran a season best of 16:23 to place 21st.  Kyle Appelquist ran a solid time of 17:30 to place 59th.  The varsity team had to beat 4 State ranked teams to win the invite.  They beat Springfield High School (ranked #2), Chatham Glenwood (ranked 20th), Taylorville (ranked 21st), and Springfield SHG (ranked 24th).

Our open runners completed the day by winning as well.  They took the top two spots.  Jake Keller was meet champion with a lifetime best 3 mile time of 17:07 on a challenging course.  Jack Hyde was runner up with a season best of 17:16.  Mason McAnally earned a medal by placing 9th with a lifetime best of 17:32.  Daniel Middendorf and Curt Kupferschmid pushed each other the entire race to place 17th and 19th.  Daniel ran a lifetime best of 17:48 and Curt ran a 17:52.  Chris Carlton and Nathaniel Cebulski were our teams 6th and 7th runners for the day.  Chris ran a season best of 17:54 and Nathaniel ran a lifetime best of 18:58. Ryan Huff and Cody Jesswein ran 8th and 9th for our team.  Ryan ran a season best of 20:21 to place 76th and Cody ran a lifetime best of 22:43 to place 112th.

Alex Keeble ran the fastest sophomore time ever by a Mahomet-Seymour runner at this meet with a time of 15:33.

Alex Keeble earned his way onto Springfield's all-time fastest sophomore list for their course.  This list has recorded all times from any school to have ever run on that course since the 1970s.  Alex is now #10 on the sophomore list.

Alex Keeble, Jackson Powell, and William Wolf were given IL elite status by dyestatil.com for their performance at the Springfield Invitational.

Three runners from our team earned a place on our team's most improved over a career list.  We look at a runner's first high school 3 mile race compared to their best overall 3 mile time in their high school career.  Nathaniel Cebulski ran a lifetime personal best of 18:58 which gave him a 6:01 career improvement for 11th on the list.  Cody Jesswein ran a lifetime personal best of 22:43 which gave him a 6:05 career improvement for 10th on the list.  Daniel Middendorf also ran a lifetime personal best of 17:48 which gave him a 7:13 career improvement.  This moved him up to 5th on the all-time list.

Our freshman runners didn't get a chance to improve their 3 mile time from last week since they ran a 2 mile race this weekend.  However, 6 out of 7 ran lifetime bests in the 2 mile race.  Gabe Pommier, Andrew Walmer, Brian Butcher, Ben Craw, Zack Przytulski, and Tristan Ray ran lifetime bests.  Andrew ran in the 10s for the first time in his life which is a big barrier.  Tristan really impressed us all as he skipped the 15s entirely and improved from the 16s to the 14s.

4 Freshmen (Gabe Pommier 2nd, Andrew Walmer 3rd, Brian Butcher 10th, and Ben Craw 12th), 4 sophomores (Alex Keeble 1st, Jake Keller 9th, Jack Hyde 11th, and Mason McAnally 16th), 3 juniors (Jackson Powell 3rd, William Wolf 5th, and Trevor Hanlon 6th), and 6 seniors (Ethan Russell 3rd, James Williams 8th, Kyle Appelquist 12th, Daniel Middendorf 16th, Curt Kupferschmid 17th, and Chris Carlton 18th) earn a spot in our top 20 fastest times and/or places at the Springfield Invitational.   Fastest times at the Springfield Invitational list.

Peoria Notre Dame Invitational:
The Peoria Notre Dame meet had 63 full teams.  This invitational is our largest and toughest meet of the season.  It is tougher than our State meet as we compete with schools that are in a larger class than we have to compete against at the State meet.  Our boys weren't intimidated by the great competition, but came out as one of the stronger teams.  There were 15 AAA State ranked teams, 6 AA State ranked teams, and 6 A State ranked teams.  Both our varsity and fresh/soph teams set a new school record by placing higher than they ever had in this invitational before.  Our varsity team placed 10th (our previous best was 13th).  They managed to beat all the AA and A State ranked teams (our team is a AA team).  The boys even managed to beat six of the AAA State ranked teams as well.  The varsity runners also set a new top 5 best average for any Mahomet team at this invitational with a 15:33.6.  They also ran the fastest top 7 times we have had at this invitational with a 17:48.4.  (Alex Keeble 15:05, Jackson Powell 15:24, William Wolf 15:35, James Williams 15:50, Gabe Pommier 15:56, Ethan Russell 16:03, and Kyle Appelquist 16:46)  Each team was able to run a total of 10 runners in the varsity race.  Chris Carlton 17:15, Daniel Middendorf 17:35, and Curt Kupferschmid 17:59 also ran very well in this race.

Our team has run in this invitational for 14 years.  In that time we have only had 15 runners ever place in the top 103 of this invite.  This year we had 4 runners.  James Williams 101st, William Wolf 63rd, Jackson Powell 47th, and Alex Keeble with our 2nd highest finish ever at 19th.

Alex Keeble, Jackson Powell, William Wolf, James Williams, and Gabe Pommier earned Illinois Elite status by dyestatil.com for their strong performance at this invitational.  Alex currently has the 35th fastest Illinois time of the year by any Illinois runner at any race this year.  Jackson Powell just missed the 96th spot by 1 second.

The fresh/soph team also set a new team record by placing 9th out of 48 full teams.  This is the highest we have ever placed in this race.  Our previous best was 12th.  Jack Hyde 16:33, Andrew Walmer 16:34, Jake Keller 16:56, Ben Craw 17:06, Brian Butcher 17:10, Mason McAnally 17:18, Joey Magyar 18:14, Zack Pryztulski 18:54, Tristan Ray 22:37, and Cody Jesswein 23:20.

Our fresh/soph team has only had 15 runners since 2000 ever place in the top 70.  This year we had 3.  Jake Keller 67th, Andrew Walmer 40th, and Jack Hyde 39th.

Our varsity and fresh/soph teams earned more medals than we ever had at this invitational before.  Alex Keeble 19th, Jackson Powell 47th, Jack Hyde 39th, and Andrew Walmer 40th all earned a medal.

In the open our boys ran very well.  Our highest open place ever was 103rd.  The meet hosts no longer keep score of the open, but it was apparent that Dhairav Vakil had the highest open finish we have ever had.  He ran a 17:49 to easily place in the top 40s.  Nathaniel Cebulski 18:19 would have also been in the top 100.  Collin Hasken 20:14, Niko Householder 22:14, Kenny Pauley 22:30, Aaron Tandy 22:48, and Christopher Williams 22:55 had great races in the open.

Of the 27 runners that ran they had 23 season bests and 20 lifetime personal best 3 mile times.  Running is very mentally and physically challenging.  It takes a lot of inner strength and determination to run faster than your previous limits from an earlier race where you had already dug down to run your best.  I really admire our runners for being able to continually improve as individuals.  Their individual efforts really help push each other and have driven our team to be very competitive on the State level.

The boys team earned a #3 State ranking for AA last week by dyestatil.com.

East Peoria Invitational:
Our team won the East Peoria Invitational for the third year in a row.  There were 22 teams represented in the race and 16 full teams.  Our team ran a solid race and set some team records.  They scored the lowest amount of points that any Mahomet-Seymour team had in this invitational before.  Our first 5 runners placed in the top 17 of the invitational and our top 7 were in the top 25.  Alex Keeble 2nd, Jackson Powell 7th, William Wolf 10th, James Williams15th, Gabe Pommier 17th, Ethan Russell 18th, and Andrew Walmer 25th.  The boys represented their school well by winning their 3rd invitational this year out of the 4 they have raced in.

This past week dyestatil.com ranked our team 2nd in the State for this week.  They mentioned that they believe we are equal with the #1 ranked team.

Our team earned more medals in this invite than we ever have before with 6 medals this year.  In the previous 8 years we had earned a grand total of 11 medals.
Alex Keeble, Jackson Powell, William Wolf, James Williams, Gabe Pommier, Ethan Russell all earned a medal by placing in the top 20.

Our medal winners, Andrew Walmer 25th, Jack Hyde 30th, Ben Craw 36th, and Brian Butcher 37th.  This really shows how strong the middle of our team is compared to other teams.  I believe that the middle pack of our team is one of the strongest in the State and has been a big reason for the success of our team this season.

The fastest sophomore from any team in the entire invitational was Alex Keeble.
The fastest freshman from any team in the invitational was Gabe Pommier.

Jack Hyde was the fastest #8 runner from any team.  Ben Craw was the fastest #9 runner from any team.  Brian Butcher was the fastest #10 runner from any team.

I was especially proud of our new runners as five of them had lifetime personal bests.

We had 6 medal winners in the invitational.  Alex Keeble 2nd, Jackson Powell 7th, William Wolf 8th, Ethan Russell 26th, James Williams 28th, and Gabe Pommier 38th.

Alex Keeble placed the highest we have ever had an individual place in this invite.  He placed 2nd only 6 second behind the returning XC state champion and 800 meter state champion.  This showed a lot of courage on Alex's part.  Alex broke our sophomore record for the fastest Mahomet sophomore runner on this course.  He also ran the fastest time ever by a Mahomet runner in the 44 year history of Mahomet's XC program with a 14:54.  Alex is only the 6th runner in the history of our school to ever break the 15:00 mark.

Conference:
The team won both the Varsity and open races.  Our team set our school history by winning the conference meet for the first time in the 28 year history of our team being in the Cornbelt conference.  Our varsity runners had to beat #5 State ranked Normal U-High in order to accomplish this feat.  U-High is especially competitive in the conference meet.  Our seven runners all placed in the top 15 of the meet to secure the win.

Alex Keeble 2nd, Jackson Powell 4th, William Wolf 5th, Andrew Walmer 8th, James Williams 12th, Gabe Pommier 14th, and Ethan Russell 15th.

Our team has been ranked #2 in the State for the past 4 weeks.

We had four runners earn all-conference status by placing in the top 10 in the conference meet.  This isn't an easy feat since so many of the top 10 runners in our conference are currently some of the top runners in the State.  Alex Keeble, Jackson Powell, William Wolf, and Andrew Walmer are 2013 all-conference runners.  This ties the most amount of all-conference runners we have had in the history of our program in one year.

Alex Keeble was given IL elite status by dyestatil.com for his conference performance.

Alex Keeble ran the fastest time ever run by a Mahomet sophomore in the conference meet at 15:38.

Our runners in the open race really showed just how strong the middle and back of the pack of our team is by winning the open race in a big way.  Jack Hyde and Trevor Hanlon battled for the top spot.  Jack Hyde won the open race and Trevor took the runner-up position.  Brian Butcher, Ben Craw, and Daniel Middendorf took the next 3 spots in the race.  Unfortunately we have not been given meet results for our open race as the hosts had some struggles with the results.

Tristan Ray ran a lifetime personal best despite the course being a very slow course.  He ran a 22:08 which moved him to the #23 spot on the most improved over a career list with a 4 minute and 18 second overall improvement.

Aaron Tandy ran a lifetime personal best.  He ran a 22:08 which moved him to the #15 spot on the most improved over a career list with a 5 minutes and 13 second overall improvement.

Cody Jesswein also ran a lifetime personal best.  He ran a 21:42 which moved him to the #6 spot on the most improved over a career list with a 7 minute and 6 second overall improvement.

Regional:
The team won the Regional meet.  They won the meet for the 3rd year in a row and the 5th time in the last 8 years.  This is only the 2nd time in our program's history where our team has won the Regional meet three consecutive years in a row.  The last time was 1987-1989 with a team that made it to State those three years.

Our boys had to out run two State ranked team to win the meet.  Our team won with a score of 25.  This is the lowest score for any Mahomet team in the 44 year history of our program.

State

The team placed 15th.  Our team had an incredible season, but sickness got the best of us in the State meet.  Alex Keeble with a fever made an attempt to race, but had to pull out of the race just after a mile.  In a meet with the State's best teams it is hard to place well when your top runner is no longer in the team score.  The field seemed to be about 20 seconds slower than normal due to the recent rains on the course.  However, freshman Andrew Walmer still managed to run a lifetime 3 mile best.  He ran a 15:52.  This is the fastest freshman time we have ever had at the State meet.  He placed 62nd.  He was the 5th fastest freshman in the State meet.   His time earned him Illinois Elite Status by dyestatil.com.  James Williams came in 2nd for the team with a 16:02.  This was a solid effort by James with the slower course.  James placed 90th.  He ended his high school season well and earned the 16th fastest time ever run by a Mahomet senior at the State meet.  Junior, William Wolf ran 3rd for the team with a 16:16.  He placed 113th.  William ran the 10th fastest time for a Mahomet junior at the State meet.  Freshman, Gabe Pommier ran a 16:26.  He placed 129th.  Gabe's time was the 3rd fastest time for a Mahomet freshman at the State meet.  Senior, Ethan Russell placed 5th for the team.  Ethan ran a 16:29 and was just a few strides behind Gabe.  Ethan placed 137th.  Ethan ran the 26th fastest senior time for a Mahomet runner at the State meet.  Junior, Jackson Powell ran a 16:43.  He placed 167th.  Jackson's time was 16th fastest time for a Mahomet junior at the State meet.

Our team had incredible support throughout the year from our parents, the alumni, the alumni parents, administration, and their teammates.  The State meet brought out the most amount of fan support we have had in years.  Thank you for your support throughout the season.

I owe a great deal of thanks to Todd Lafond who has volunteered for our program for the 5th season.  Despite not getting paid, he is at every practice and meet throughout the season.  Our team is much better because of his help.
